Cidadella Cascais, Portugal

Masterplanning leisure-based mixed use development

Project Description

Petersham Group was engaged by Portuguese leisure company and developer, Blandy Group SGPS, to work with leading Lisbon-based architect, Manuel Salgado of Atelier RISCO and museum designers, Haley Sharpe, to develop a project master plan and brief for the future development of the 60,000 m2 ‘Cidadela Cascais’.

The Cidadela is an 18th Century fortification located in the Portuguese resort of Cascais and was occupied by the Portuguese military for over 300 years before being handed back to the town of Cascais in 2007. The town wished to see this moribund site reinvigorated and fully utilised as a leisure destination whilst retaining the protected historic fabric of the building.

The project master plan developed included major anchor visitor attraction telling the military and social history of the Cidadella; an archaeological museum, a four-star boutique hotel with roof spa, shops, cafés, restaurants, events space and university business school campus. The project master plan was accepted by the Mayor of Cascais and by the Camara Municipal de Cascais as the basis of the longer term development master plan for the site (unfortunately, the economic crisis has since intervened and the project was not developed).
