Petersham Group carried out an options appraisal of the historic Estação Aquicola do Rio Ave (River Research Station) located in the North Portuguese resort of Vila do Conde.
Clients the Câmara Municipal de Vila do Conde wished to take on the lease of the site and redevelop it with a view to creating a destination attraction that would showcase the ecology and natural environment of the area whilst restoring working aquaculture to the site. Petersham’s solution, the Ecoparc Vila do Conde, is conceived as a unique blend of destination visitor attraction and working aquaculture station, showcasing the use of sustainable technologies and utilising a range of alternative energy sources to create a project with a minimal carbon footprint.
The planned Ecoparc will tell the story of the local River Ave and of the wildlife within it, bringing the history of the Aquaculture station to life using a wide range of interpretative techniques from aquaria through to sound guides, with the emphasis on experiential interactives. Visitors will gain a privileged glimpse into a working aquaculture business as well as getting close up to the natural inhabitants of the river. The proposed role of Petersham Group, in close association with their local partners in Portugal, Eurofun Lda. would be to manage the further development of the project, through planning and development to opening.
