Koli National Park & Resort, Finland

Business review & options assessment

Project Description

The resort of Koli in Finland currrently attracts in the region of 130,000 visitors per annum, both during the winter season as a result of ts downhill skiing facilities (the closest to Helsinki) and other winter sports activities and also, its location in the ’National Landscape’ attracting many thousands of summer visitors too.

Koli was chosen as the principle focus for the further development of tourism in the Karelia area and Petersham Group was engaged by the regional development agency, Koli ry, to advise on how to develop the resort, widen its appeal and raise its profile.

After a phase of intensive research and familiarisation with the current tourism offer, lead by staff from its Finnish office, the Petersham team lead a workshop to establish a better and more detailed understanding of Koli’s current status, its hopes and aspirations.

Based on this, they were able to make a series of recommendations aimed at extending and deepening both the winter and summer seasons and widening the appeal of the resort to the international market, the Russian incoming tourists in particular.

On the basis of this, Koli ry aims to increase this proportion of international tourists from 9% to 25% by 2015. This strategy, on Petersham Group’s advice, will require them to deliver a programme to develop better facilities, visitor services and programmes of activities in order to attract these additional visitors and then to deliver a high quality leisure experience to them once they are in the resort.
