Parklands Resort Masterplan, Moscow, Russia

Leisure master planning for 5,000 hectare site

Project Description

The Moscow-based Belaya Dacha Group working in collaboration with international hotel and casino group, Sun International, had a vision to create an integrated leisure resort called ‘Parklands’ on a 5,000-hectare site located 50kms south of Moscow. They appointed UK architects, BDP to develop a proposal showing how this would be achieved.

BDP in turn sought the advice and input of Petersham Group as experts in the field of leisure master planning and working together, a master plan was created which encompassed a very wide range of activities including sporting, residential, entertainment, hospitality and casinos, centred round a series of focal points which included a lake, a Formula One circuit and a shopping mall. At the heart of Parklands was a 5* plus casino hotel as well as a 4* family hotel and a Centre Parcs-style Dacha development.

Parklands had to work also as a four season destination, so a distinctive summer and winter use programme was devised. Summer uses included sailing and other water sports, an 18 hole golf course and boardwalk with contextual retail and dining. In winter, activities included cross country skiing, skating on the lake, snowmobiles and sledding. All year round, a covered shopping mall and several family visitor attractions including a biodome and an FEC offered entertainment for those staying at the location.
