Wisley Golf Club, Surrey

Building a championship golf course

Project Description

As Managing Director of Arlington Estates Ltd, part of Arlington Securities Plc, from 1988 to 1991, Jonathan Rounce was responsible for the development of the 27-hole Wisley Golf Club. That involvement ran from the point at which 224-acres of redundant Surrey farmland was purchased, on through planning and development to the Club’s opening in 1991 – £19.6m later!

The vision for Wisley was based on the desire to create a new syndicated golf club with facilities of the highest possible standard and to ‘sell’ 750 memberships (corresponding to the maximum permitted number of members). Each unit so sold comprised an ordinary share and a debenture, which gave the investor the right to nominate one person for membership of the Club (typically the investor), subject to the payment of annual dues.

The course, comprising three 9-hole loops was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr.  Together with the 23,000 ft2 Lutyens-esque clubhouse the Club has come to be regarded as one of the finest in Britain and with a significant international reputation.
